Yolanda Barbier Gibson serves as the Acting Director for the Student Success Team at the new Community College of the District of Columbia. As a main point of contact for community college students, she creates and implements programs that help students enjoy a positive college experience and stay on track toward course completion and graduation.
Mrs. Gibson has held numerous positions with both two-year and four-year higher education institutions—most recently at the Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA), one of the largest community colleges in the nation. As NOVA’s campus and community relations specialist, Ms. Barbier played an integral role in facilitating connections between the student body and the local community and developed and carried out innovative communications strategies to promote NOVA’s academic and extracurricular programs. At The George Washington University, Ms. Barbier served as the evening academic coordinator for the Arlington Graduate Education Center, where she oversaw technical equipment, administrative support, customer service, and facility issues.
Mrs. Gibson is the Intermediate Past-President of the Marymount University Alumni Association Board and founder of the Black Alumni Chapter as well as a member of the Alexandria Chamber of Commerce, Alexandria Board Leadership Exchange, West End Business Association, and Black Public Relations Society of Washington, D.C. She has received the Alumni Club Leadership Award from Marymount University and the Virginia Community College System Classified Staff Leadership Certificate, and was listed in Who’s Who Among College Students in 2004. She has a bachelor’s degree in communications with a minor in business administration from Marymount University, a Master’s degree in Community College Teaching from George Mason University, and is working to complete a doctoral of arts degree in Higher Education Administration from George Mason University.
