Continuing Education is partnering with the Department of Public Works (DPW) to create an innovative program that is focusing on employees in the Street and Alley Sweepers division. This pilot project will provide education, professional development and training to 20 front line workers and 10 managers. The program goals are based on focus group discussions with DPW employees and will provide 80 hours of instruction. There are three core modules:
- Foundational skills in computer and Math/English literacy
- Communication skills including customer service, workplace ethics and conflict resolution
- Performance enhancement skills in critical thinking and working in groups
Each student who completes the program will receive a certificate and be awarded 8 Continuing Education Units (CEUs). The program is being held at the new DPW training facility on Okie Street and begins in March, 2013.
This project has enormous potential to upgrade the skills and education for thousands of District government workers who want to jumpstart their career and start on an education pathway leading to the University of the District of Columbia Community College.
